In early 2016 I began working with the New York Downtown poet and all around mensch Steve Dalachinsky to set some of his poems for singer, five instrumentalist, and a computer musician. Steve agree to provide enough material for two hours of music.
As part of the project Scott Friedlander recorded Steve reading the poems, which were used as source material by the electronic musician.
Although Steve was a fixture in New York's avant-garde jazz scene (an association that eventually crossed international borders), I decided to work against type. The music was written for operatic soprano, wooden flute, clarinet, tuba, electronics, accordion, and electric guitar.
Our intention was to premier the music and then record it for release.
The first hour of music, "The Songs of Steve Dalachinsky, Suite One," was premiered in Cologne, Germany in December of 2016. The music has not yet been recorded for release.
Steve left us in early September of this year. This Go Fund Me campaign is intended to allow me to record and release the first suite.
Of course, I would have preferred to have tracked the material while Steve was with us. I thought I had more time. Now I feel compelled to finish the project while he's still fresh in my mind.
Any funds raised will go toward the cost of recording the CD, a possible contribution to a label to release the CD, and to paying the musicians who are not me. I will not accept payment for the project. In the unlikely event that the project makes a profit, the contributors to the project will decide what to do with the leftover money. (Donate to an appropriate charity? Return funds to the contributors? Something else?)
