ABOUT   "SOMETHING THAT MATTERS"   DOCUMENTARY

THE JOURNEY

In January 2013, on a safari in South Africa, Lyon befriended a charismatic bushman named Fritz Breytenbach who changed his life.

From this meeting, Fritz and Lyon embarked on a 1000 km trek on foot across South Africa  for the sole purpose... to raise awareness of the senseless slaughter of the African rhino. To complete the mission Lyon put together a skeleton film crew and the makings of a documentary was born. Through the bush and villages after almost 4 months and a few pair of boots  the 1000k goal was reached. This film chronicles that journey .

THE WHY

Today, an ounce of rhino horn powder is more valuable than gold or cocaine.

In Africa, one rhino is poached, every 7 hours. At this rate, they will be extinct in
6 years.

Strong evidence shows that profits from the horn trade fund and fuel Al Qaeda
activities in Northern Africa.

THE SAD TRUTH

Ninety percent of poached horns end up in Asia followed by the US. Due to  progressively stable economic conditions in Asian countries,
the ever-growing middle class increasingly demands rhino horn simply as a means to showcase their new found wealth and prosperity.

THE FILM

In 2013 I embarked on a 1000k trek across S.Africa. The reason was to raise awareness to the rhino poaching crisis . A team of 8 people filmed  over 3 months of footage covering the journey. Money ran out and life happed. Ive been fighting to finish the film ever since. For the longest time I wanted to go back and film just a few other things. But upon recent review of the massive amounts of footage already finished. Ive realized an important film and very compelling story is there and needs to new told.

Now in 2020 it's more tragic than ever and the story needs to be told.

"Something that Matters” will educate people about what is really going on with rhinos and the poaching crisis in South Africa. The horrific way these animals are killed often means they take days to die in anguish. The film will show our director's journey into the harsh realities of poaching .

Many people ask me what this film will do for the rhinos. They say, "What we need is more boots on the ground to shoot poachers!"... No! That is not the answer. There are 100 replacement poachers for every one you shoot or arrest. I've seen first-hand the benefit of educating the local villagers of the effects of poaching on their community. If the village elders don't want poachers or poacher recruiters in their village, there won’t be. EVER. This alone will greatly bring down poaching rates by making it much more difficult for the syndicates to get poachers on the ground, thus giving other means of anti- poaching a greater opportunity to work. Ultimately, I want to touch the hearts of the young people in Asia, to show them the horrors their forefathers created and, crucially how this generation can stop it.

This has been a long and heart whrenching journey . Help me to bring it to closure and into the hearts of you...the people.
