Solomon Islands Education for Girls

Who We Are
We are a group of Melbourne-based Year 11 students who want to help provide opportunities for girls growing up in the Solomon Islands to achieve their dreams.

Our Travels to the Solomon Islands
We travelled to the Solomon Islands between 15th - 25th Jan, 2020 and want to thank everyone who supported our fundraising efforts for girls education there.  We got to see a typical school and we loved connecting with the locals at Chubikopi Village.  Learning first hand about how the HEDS foundation works was amazing and we are very confident that every dollar we raised is in safe hands and is directly supporting health and education in the Marovo Lagoon in the Solomon Islands.

AFL comes to the Solomons
Here's a pic of us with the first Solomon Islands football team in Chubikopi Village. A small hitch, currently only one team in the league - they are bound to take off, just give it a couple of years.

Weaving with the women
We also spent time with the women in Chubikopi learning how to make fans, hats and baskets with coconut palm fronds.

Health and Education in Solomon Islands

On a more sobering note, all high schools are boarding schools in the Solomons... the first images are of the school and the girls' accomodation (there are some serious overcrowding and health concerns with these facilities)...the later images are of a clinic that services 20,000 people with a doctor visit every 6 months.  Learning about the complexities of the HEDS Foundation's important work supporting health and education in this area was a real eye opener for us.

How we got there
A big plane, a small plane, a tiny plane and a boat...

Fundraising for girls Education in the Solomon Islands,  2019

Before we commence Year 12 in Australia, we are travelling to the Solomon Islands in January 2020 to assist with volunteer projects in education and health, and we are aiming to raise $5,000 for for girls' education scholarships.

Girls are Missing out on Education

Barely one in ten girls graduate high school in the Solomon Islands - one of the lowest rates in the world. In the latest Solomon Islands poverty profile,  the number one barrier to education for girls beyond year 10 is school fees. More information.

Education is Transformational
Global research finds that every year of completed secondary education reduces the risk of child marriage and early pregnancy and increases the likelihood of achieving gender equity at home and in relationships.

Barriers can be Overcome
Our aim is to raise money to support the Health Education Development Solutions (HEDS) Foundation  in their critical work supporting the education and health of girls and the professional development of teachers in the Solomon Islands.

Achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
Raising funds for girls education in the Solomon Islands is in line with Australia's commitment to the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. Sustainable development goal 5 is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
