Solidarity under COVID19

The city of Tulakrm is located in the West Bank of Palestine and COVID-19 has plunged it into a situation of crisis.

In Palestine, many families go through daily struggles to sustain their livelihood; the recent COVID-19 crisis and the news measures that were taken to prevent its spiral out of control have not made these families’ mission any easier. Many have lost their jobs, as well as access to food and medicine; some need to pay medical bills under a health system that’s already suffering from lack of equipment and facilities.

The Palestinian authorities, already dependent on the international community for aid, has declared its incapacity to take care of all the families in need. But the international aid has stopped amidst this crisis, and left every country on its own to face it.

In my native city, Tulakrm, many families have lost their livelihood and are now unable to provide for their essential needs, like food, water and medicine. Many inhabitants of Tulakrm used to work inside the occupied territory (Israel), and the ones who couldn’t endanger themselves by working inside the separation wall were left with two options: working in the agricultural field, or for small businesses like restaurants and cafes. All of these have been shut down due to the lockdown, causing a massive loss of jobs and access to essentials to cover the costs of living.

No-one is allowed in or out of the city, as the municipality has decided to close all entrances to the city and surrounding villages. The inhabitants are completely disconnected from resources and potential of help. Although this is a necessary step to stop the spread of the virus, it has dire consequences for the families in need.

Since the beginning of the crisis, I have been in touch personally with people who have insight into the situation, some social workers, some in the police force. Through and with them, we have managed to find about a number of families for whom the need for help is immediate. Their needs vary from: paying medical bills, buying medicine, food, supplies for young children and babies, paying electricity and water bills. In some extreme cases, family members suffering from disabilities were denied medical care due to the lockdown and are in need of private nursing help.

So far there seems no end in sight to this crisis, especially for conflict zones like Palestine, which will continue taking extreme measures to avoid the spread of the virus knowing that the health system and society as a whole would collapse in no time if the pandemic got hold of the region. By trying to protect the country from an overwhelming catastrophe, the authorities are left to deny many people their basic needs, simply because they are not capable of the economic prowess of rich countries. This wealth has allowed those countries and their citizens to accept the lockdown and stay home, but not everyone has this privilege.

This is where the importance of SOLIDARITY and SUPPORT come into play: those who have can now come to the aid of the have-nots.
