Solidarity fund for Festus Flumo

UPDATE (4/4/22)

First I want to thank this community for coming together and supporting Festus. It is incredible how quickly we were able to raise $2k when our friend was in need.

Festus recently had to go to the emergency room from intense pain he's been experiencing in his left leg, and they diagnosed him with cellulitis. He is trying to manage that pain and address the infection now, on top of his other health issues he is still dealing with. Between the emergency room bill, other outstanding doctor's bills, transportation to/from doctors, and the painkillers, even after receiving the $2k, he's still struggling to make ends meet.

So we're asking to double our initial goal - $4000 - so that Festus can focus on healing and resting. Please contribute what you can. If you already contributed, thank you! It would mean a lot if you considered giving more.

Feel free to give him a call (DM me for his phone #) or send him an email [email redacted] if you want to connect with him directly - he'd love to hear from you!

(And this summer, once Festus is well, let's find a time to all come together to make some food and re-connect. TBD but I want to put the vibe out there!)

I'm setting up this fundraiser on behalf of Festus Flumo, a friend and comrade who was my co-worker at the Maryland Food Co-op. He's been struggling recently and asked for support from our community, so please donate what you can. I'm sharing below more info with his permission.

After UMD closed the co-op in June 2019, Festus has been unemployed. He began getting unemployment benefits in October 2019. After missing a weekly check-in, he was unable to access benefits from October 2020 to March 2021. He eventually regained access and got paid back for January to March 2021 but missed 3 months of benefits. After that, it was okay until August 2021, when scammers tried to access his unemployment account, which locked it. In order to verify his identity, the government wanted his driver's license, passport, and green card, each of which are either currently expired or lost. The passport costs $600 to replace and the green card costs $540. This means he's lost access to his sole source of income until he can get these documents replaced. With his health issues, no car, and COVID delays at the DMV and embassy, he has been borrowing money from friends to get by but it isn't sustainable.

So we're asking for our DC and UMD community to support Festus by helping him get enough money to cover these costs and for doctor's visits so that he can finally get access back to his unemployment benefits. Festus put so much of his body and soul into the Maryland Food Co-op, and everyone who was lucky enough to be a part of that space can thank Festus by supporting him in this tough time.

For transparency, the funds here will go to my bank account and I'll forward it to Festus' son via Cashapp.
