Solidarity beyond charity with Honduras

Donation protected
We are a group of Honduran young progressives and Central American allies in the Americas coming together to build long term solidarity beyond charity for Honduras in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Hurricane Eta and Iota. In building solidarity long term with the Honduran people and social movements we hope to put money and resources directly in the hands of those communities most affected by these tragic catastrophes and to social movement organizations that have staunchly defended Honduran democracy after the US-backed 2009 coup d'etat that began the political, constitutional and societal destruction of the country. We are committed to fighting for Honduran democracy and liberation and to support the resistance movement seeking to rebuild and refound the country.

For 11.5, years since the 2009 coup d'etat, we have seen Honduran democracy and Human Rights collapse. We have seen the murders of thousands of activists, campesino land and water protectors such as fierce Indigenous and campesina leaders Berta Caceres and Margarita Murillo, human rights defenders, Trans people like Vicky Hernandez whose case is before the ICHR this year, and over 372 murders of  LGBTI people that remain without investigation or prosecution. Honduras is a violent place for women from 15-24, where women’s lives are not protected, communities face increasing rates of femicides and derision of young women workers. Protesters have also been jailed and confined in prisons for voicing dissent and fighting to protecting rivers, the forests, and the environment, effectively fighting climate change with their bodies and lives.

In 2018 we witnessed masses of immigrants leaving Honduras in caravans with nothing but their clothes on their backs, rejecting and protesting with their bodies the lack of democracy, the lack of jobs, land and food in the Juan Orlando Hernandez dictatorship supported by US taxpayers. At the US-Mexico border and the Mexico-Guatemala border, migrants face dire and unjust conditions of detention, harassment and extortion, death and deportation of those most vulnerable. US Republicans and Liberals alike have not been able to stop the deportation, the cruel detention of children and transgender women, and all Hondurans and Central Americans.

These injustices against the people of Honduras can only be stopped when we respect Honduran people’s right to self determination, protect social movement leaders, honor their sovereignty, and support their opportunities to build their own democracy.

We ask you to join us as we embrace our role here, in accompaniment with and by walking alongside the Honduran people, with anti-capitalist forms of solidarity and action, as they reimagine and refound their country, and envision a more dignified future in which many worlds can fit and thrive.

In the words of Berta Caceres:

La Madre Tierra militarizada, cercada, envenenada, donde se violan sistemáticamente los derechos elementales, nos exige actuar. Construyamos entonces sociedades capaces de coexistir de manera justa, digna y por la vida. Juntémonos y sigamos con esperanza defendiendo y cuidando la sangre de la tierra y los espíritus…

¡Despertemos¡ ¡Despertemos Humanidad¡ Ya no hay tiempo.
