She is 12 years old, smart and beautiful. She had the brightest future ahead of her until she sustained devastating complications during a scheduled surgery on her jaw. One of the major vessels was damaged and bled, requiring emergency craniotomy to save her life.
She did survive but tragically got a very extensive stroke that will change her life forever.
I am not sure what part of this upsets me the most: Is it that this happened to a child? That this was avoidable? That her life will never be the same? That it happened in Ukraine and most likely would have never have happened if her planned surgery was done in the US? Or is it the fact that her mother (a pediatrician who gets paid $177/month for a full time job) will never be able to afford an acute rehabilitation admission (9K for a month!).
She is scheduled to be transferred to the rehab center (http://nodus.ua/en/ ) on January 2nd, 2018. I am hoping and praying that Sofia will be able to stay a full month as recommended by her doctors. She will never get this chance for recovery again.
