Sofia’s Heart ❤️
On November 17, 2020 Sofia Perez was born into this world. Parents, Perry and Len Perez, who have been expecting their first child were overjoyed with their beautiful daughter’s arrival. Amidst the challenges of COVID, her birth was an absolute blessing.
On Thanksgiving, it was apparent that Sofia was not feeding regularly and she was taken to the clinic for dehydration and a fever. Out of caution, she was admitted to our local hospital and soon after doctors noticed her breathing became labored. After a diagnostic procedure doctors noticed a congenital heart abnormality, which was later determined to be DORV.
DORV is a rare congenital heart defect where the pulmonary artery and the aorta— the heart’s two major arteries — both connect to the right ventricle. As a result of this condition, oxygenated and deoxygenated blood mix in the chambers of the heart, which reduces oxygen delivery to the organs. DORV requires an open heart surgery, which cannot be performed on Guam.
In order for Sofia to acquire treatment away from Guam, she would need an air ambulance that will cost close to $200,000. The Perez family needs your help. Please consider donating to Sofia’s parents to help Sofia leave Guam for Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles. This precious baby has been in ICU at GMH for about two weeks awaiting transportation. A substantial payment must be made prior to booking the air ambulance.
Dr. Benjamin Sison and his family are long time close family friends of the Perez family and will be helping us in this endeavor.
