My sister, Sofia, was hit by a drunk driver on Christmas Eve. Sofia was on her way home when she encountered a person who needed help with their vehicle, which was in a dangerous position in the middle of the road, airbags deployed. Sofia pulled over to help, along with another good samaritan. Sofia was struck while she was attempting to help push the car out of the road.
She has suffered severe traumatic injuries in her brain and was induced into a coma the day she was admitted into the ICU. She continues in a coma as of today. She is stable thanks to the doctors and nurses at UMC.
Sofia has a long road ahead. If and when she wakes up, her rehabilitation will be a long and slow process. She will have some procedures in the next few days to help her breathe and get nutrition in a less invasive way than she has now. After that she will be transferred to a rehab facility where specialists will work with her and her progress.
We do not know the outcome of her injuries, we do not know how much recovery and rehab she will need. All we can do is wait, and hope that her body heals itself and that she comes back to us. Sofia is a strong young woman and we are optimistic that she will surprise all of us.
We have had so many people reach out wanting to help financially. So, here we are. We dont know how all this will evolve but obviously expenses will incur to the family and they will begin to add up depending on the course of her recovery.
All these funds will be used for WHATEVER she may need. Currently in ICU for the next week-two weeks, and then hopefully into a facility to help her regain brain acitvity/motor skills/language whatever she may have lost in with her injury.
We appreciate all and any help, but most of all, the emotional support and the love sent to our Sofia and to us. Our family is in awe of the acts of kindness that have surrounded us.
We hope to soon be sharing good news with you all.
