Sofia's Treatment Fund

Donation protected
Sofia has a tumor on her kidney. They are removing it today at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis. The surgery will be long and she will spend the next several days in the hospital. The pathology of the tumor will dictate the treatment. At the vary least, Sofia is facing months of weekly chemotherapy at Riley which is an hour and a half from home. As we all know a cancer diagnosis is devastating both emotionally and financially.  For this reason I am setting up this fund, if we can help to alleviate some of the financial burden this family faces they can focus more attention on Sofia's physical healing. The financial impact in lost work and travel expenses have already begun and will go on for months to come.

A note from Corinna -

Dear Family and friends,

Wednesday Sofia had her routine check up with her endocrine specialist at Riley hospital in Indianapolis. It was a completely routine visit and only as we were wrapping up and the Dr. asked if I had any other questions, I just happened to mention my concern that she had a rigid lump on her right side (which she has had for at least a year and I have brought up with several different doctors but they had never found it to be of concern until yesterday). Her endocrine specialist palpated her belly and was immediately concerned there was a mass there. He sent her immediately for an ultrasound where they confirmed a large mass on the right kidney and then further imaging with CT confirmed a 13cm (5inch) tumor which has consumed her entire right kidney.
Right now, the CT showed no other metastasis anywhere else and they are treating this as a Wilms Tumor of the kidney. They are cancerous but with favorable histology that can usually be removed and successfully treated with chemotherapy. We will know much more after the surgery and after they are able to biopsy and examine the tumor once it is removed.
This morning she has surgery and we will stay in the hospital with her for about 5 days. This is devastating and shocking. She has had no symptoms or pain and is an incredibly happy and playful little girl. We feel confident we are in very good hands at Riley Hospital and they have all been wonderful so far. I will do my best to keep everyone updated and we have been so touched and appreciative of all of the love and concern being sent our way.
