Social Justice Storytime in Durham is ready to expand!

https://www.facebook.com/SocialJusticeStorytimeDurham

Our mission is to promote a more inclusive society by creating a space for children and families to learn and discuss contemporary issues through exposure to children's books and community story time.  Our primary goal is to educate ourselves and our children to build stronger and safer communities. We know that the stories we hear in childhood have the power to revolutionize our lives.

We have carefully chosen books, activities, music, and crafts for young children, typically age 0 to 8. Some of our topics include bullying versus positive behavior, differently-abled people, family structures, gender identity, immigrant and refugee rights, LGBTQIA people, racial equality, religion and spirituality, healthy choices and our bodies, women and girls, and environmental issues.

When we started this adventure in October 2016, we had no idea that more than 50 children and their families would show up to our first event! Every month has been a wonderful experience and we have learned a lot. And now, we are asking for your support.

How will we spend the money?

1. BOOKS! This is our biggest expense. Currently, we have a small but respectable library of Social Justice books but there are so many more to share with you. We've made an Amazon Wish List of our books. If you are more comfortable donating books directly, here is the link --  http://a.co/714T6j5

2. Volunteer Recruitment and Advertising -- Diversity is the cornerstone of our movement and we know that when reading these stories, it's most effective when coming from a person in that community. So we are actively seeking volunteers of color, LGBTQIA folks, various religious populations, differently abled bodies, fathers, immigrants and refugees, and all other marginalized populations. We also want to expand our audience. This would involve posters and fyers to display in Durham, especially in communities where internet access is limited, and advertising on various media platforms. Other advertising includes mailing information to community organizations and hosting tabling events at events and festivals.

3. Supplies -- Each month we have an activity and craft during Storytime.  We would use the money to buy more construction paper, crayons, markers, paint, glue, and other fun crafting supplies.

Please share our fundraiser with your friends, family, and co-workers! We very much appreciate your support!
