Socialist Fined for Defending the Right to Protest

On March 20, a Socialist Alternative organiser was fined and threatened with arrest by Merseyside Police for attending a safe, socially distanced demonstration to defend the right to protest. 

The latest Tory Police and Crime Bill represents a serious infringement on the democratic right to organise, using the pandemic as cynical cover for a state clampdown on activists, trade unionists and all those who want to show their opposition to this government. 

While the Tories feign concern over socially distanced protests, they allow bosses to continue profiting from cramming workers into non-essential workplaces. 

Blame for spreading Covid does not lie with ordinary people and workers, but with Johnson, his ministers and the capitalist interests they serve. 

Many more people are coming to realise this, and it is precisely for this reason that the Bill has been forced through.
