Social Justice / Civil Rights Tour

Donation protected
This year YES Prep Fifth Ward started an afterschool course. The aim of the course is to increase student awareness of global, national, and community based social justice and civil rights movements, as well as expose students to the history of civil rights movements around the world.

Students have dedicated after school time for weekly meetings to engage in opportunities to learn about transgender and LGBTQ issues, Black Lives Matters, the history of the Klu Klux Klan, as well as issues such as the international water crisis, Malala Yousafzai's impact, and intersectionality by exploring the lack of identity Black Mexicans experience. This learning has taken the form of reading articles, conducting research, and watching documentaries on these topics.

Now that the students have dedicated themselves to learning in the classroom, we are embarking on the next phase of our mission to create global leaders. We are taking the students on a tour of the Southern U.S to gain insight in the United States Civil Rights Movement. Students will visit New Orleans; Mobile, AL, Montgomery, AL; Atlanta, GA; Birmingham, AL; and Jackson, MS. During this trip students will visit Museums and Memorials such as the one dedicated to Rosa Parks and the Center for Civil and Human Rights. Students will also pay homage to individuals such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Medgar Evers by visiting their homes.

The students at YES Prep Fifth Ward are dedicated to becoming global citizens prepared to lead. They are so committed that they are dedicating their Spring Break (March 10th – March 17th) to allow for the travel required to gain exposure to the 1960s civil rights movement. These students will also take all their learning from the course and create elementary and middle school social justice sessions to share with neighboring schools and students.

YES Prep Fifth Ward is also a Title I school, so while the students will be responsible for covering a partial fee, it would be irresponsible to ask the families to cover the entire cost of the trip.

We are asking for $3600.00 in donations. For a more in-depth look, please review the budget that is attached to see an itemized breakdown of the cost.
