Social Distance 4 Social Justice: Heart of a Woman
with Taylor Adams, Maitri White, and Jaime Sharp

Heart of a Woman is the third event of the new Concert4aCause virtual mini-series: Social Distance 4 Social Justice. This series without a live audience was begun in response to the isolation and upheaval of 2020 caused by global pandemic, social injustice and political polarization. Heart of a Woman is a recital of classical vocal music with piano, and will feature the music of African Diaspora composers Leslie Adams, Undine Smith Moore, Scott Joplin, William Grant Still and Margaret Bonds. Current U-M SMTD student sopranos, Taylor Adams and Maitri White and recent U-M SMTD alumna, mezzo soprano Jaime Sharp will be joined by U-M SMTD pianist-coach, Dr. Kathryn Goodson.

Today we seek financial and cultural support for the LGBTQ+ community of Detroit, specifically for the Trans Sistas of Color Project and the Ruth Ellis Center. From the Heart of a Woman singers: “As Black women we are not strangers to collective heartbreak and grief, but also are not strangers to incredible joy, hope, and community organizing. Through our music, we share stories of those who came before us and learn important lessons from their joy and pain. We stand on the shoulders of giants, but we understand there is still much work to be done. No one is free until all of us are free."
