SOAP FOR HOPE - EMERGENCY PANDEMIC RELIEF UGANDA

“Soap for Hope,” a collaborative project bringing coronavirus hygiene supplies and psychosocial supports through the arts to vulnerable refugees in central Uganda, enters its second phase in 2021. In 2020 we raised $2000 and, thanks to generous donors, we provided 100 especially vulnerable refugees with kits each containing 3 bars of soap, 1 reusable facemask, sanitizer, and a pair of gloves, and with psychosocial assistance and education using arts and music to address mental health concerns related to the coronavirus.
In Phase Two, starting February 2021, we aim to get critical COVID-19 hygiene supplies and related psychosocial support and arts-based education to an additional 200 especially vulnerable people in Kiryandongo Refugee camp in central Uganda. Our new goal of $4000 will enable us to purchase and distribute 200 reusable masks, sanitizers, and reusable glove sets and 600 bars of soap to enable the elderly to maintain hygiene and sanitation during COVID-19 to reduce both anxiety and the spread of the virus. We will sensitize and educate by disseminating accurate information so that older people have clear messages and resources on how to stay physically and mentally healthy during the pandemic. We will use talents in arts and music to provide psychosocial supports to the elders and we will also provide screening, therapy and referrals to psychiatric case management to be carried out by other mental health partners.
