Snips and Jabs Grenada phase 1

Working throughout Grenada as a veterinarian, I meet many families who cannot afford to have their dogs sterilized or vaccinated.
We at Dr Carter Vet-Services conducted pilot projects with the "Bathway beach dogs" to complete a ballpark cost analysis and assess the feasibility of doing a project that will have a meaningful impact on the island’s dog population.
Male and female dogs were captured, transported to our location, sterilized, kept for a recovery period, vaccinated then returned. Based on the information gathered from the "Bathway Beach Dogs Project" (you can see their story and many others on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/drcartervet/ ), we came up with the following breakdown {in US dollars}:
Surgery $100,
Vaccinations/dewormings/microchip $75,
pickup/dropoff/hospitalization $25. ($200 per dog or $100 surgical to $100 medical)
Our plan is as follows:
1) dogs are collected transported to our location.
2) Selected dog’s are fitted with an electronic microchip and entered in to our database.
3) Dogs are dewormed, vaccinated with core vaccines, and regionally recommended vaccines. (Parvovirus, Distemper, Parainfluenza, Adenovirus, Leptospirosis, Rabies)
4) Dogs are sterilized (Spayed or Neutered) and kept for an observatory period. Owned dogs 24hrs, and Strays 5 days.
5) Followup calls or visit where necessary.
6) Dog’s are examined fully and tested for Transmissible Venereal Tumor "TVT" (where applicable).
7) Female dogs are examined for Mammary Tumors. These tests will be covered by Dr. Carter Vet-Services.
The goal is to do 100 dogs in this phase of the project and 1000 dogs in the next phase, after statistical analysis.
The process takes 10-20 surgery days, at 5-10 dogs per day, 2-5 males and 2-5 females. I am donating the veterinary time. The surgeries are done in a set protocol with an avenue for other veterinarians and veterinary students to assist.
Our goal is to treat 100 dogs in Phase One of Snips and Jabs and 1,000 dogs in the next phase, after statistical analysis.
It hurts me to see so many dogs in Grenada with sexually transmitted infections such as TVT, or Parvovirus-infected puppies and dogs dying because their owners cannot afford veterinary care. Rabies is also endemic to Grenada and although infections are 100% fatal, vaccinations have proven to be 100% successful at prevention. We help as much as we can, yet our reach is limited by available resources.
My primary intention has always been to improve the standard of veterinary care in Grenada, and to help as many animals and people as I can. It is my genuine belief that with your help we can make a difference.
