Snacktivism Fundraiser

Do you want to make an immediate impact in the New Haven community? What if that involved eating delicious snacks? If you responded yes to either of these questions, then read on!

Many refugees come to New Haven with a wealth of culinary tradition and expertise, but struggle with formidable language and cultural barriers. Snacktivism's mission is to empower and employ refugee cooks in our community by bringing their delicious food to Yale students, all the while raising awareness of the many problems that they have faced and continue to experience every day.

Nadda is the first refugee to be part of the project. She is from Baghdad and has seven children. She was forced out because of the war, and lived in Syria and Turkey before finally making it to the U.S. four years ago. Since then, she has had a hard time getting a job due to language difficulties, but she has always been a good cook, and dreams of one day owning a restaurant here!

This is where you come in! We have been working to sell her food since March, and have had some incredibly successful runs in Yale's late-night, student-run cafes, but we can't do this alone. We don’t want to take away from her income to finance our startup costs, which include licensing and incorporation fees, marketing, advertising, and the initial ingredient supplies. Because this is such a large operation, we have calculated that we will need close to $2000!

Remember that while whatever you choose to give will probably not make a lasting dent in your wallet, your gift will have an incredible impact on Nadda's family of nine, and all of the families that will find employment once Snacktivism is in full force.

We are grateful for any and all support in getting this initiative off the ground and launching a sustainable economic model for many refugees to come!

Tl;dr
Snacktivism is a social enterprise founded at Yale University (New Haven, CT) by a group of Yale students. Our team is made up of 20 students with diverse expertise and interests, led by a carefully selected leadership cohort. As a team, we have expertise in business, refugee aid, and the cooking business.
Snacktivism has been set up to empower and employ refugees in New Haven through food. We are raising funds to incorporate and employ our first chef, Nadda. Nadda is an Iraqi refugee who was resettled to New Haven 5 years ago.
Caterina, one of the founders, has worked with her family for the past three years as a cultural companion through IRIS, our local resettlement agency. Caterina regularly visits Nadda’s home and communicates with her by phone.
The funds gathered here will be collected by Michael Whalen, the treasurer of the association, who will use them to pay for the items (i.e. licensing and incorporation fees, marketing, advertising, and the initial ingredient supplies) that will benefit Nadda and the other refugees in the future.
