Alayah's Snack Fundraiser for EHE

It’s hard to learn on an empty stomach.

My name is Alayah, and I just finished my first week of kindergarten at East Houma Elementary (EHE).  I had so much fun in my first week of school.  I love my new teacher Ms. Kennedy, and I am her biggest helper!

On the first day of school, Ms. Kennedy told us that we can bring in money and buy snacks in the afternoon.  I was super excited about this because I do get hungry in the afternoon, and lets just be honest, I'm 5 years old, and I LOVE snacks!  When I got home, I told my mom about the snacks.  They are $0.50, but I wanted a snack and a drink, so I asked my mom for $1.  The next day, I couldn't wait til the afternoon, I wondered what kind of snack I would buy with my dollar.

The day passed and the time finally came, it was snack time, so I got my dollar out of my backpack, and I went to line up.  As I stood there in line for my snack, I was confused and concerned.  My new friends all stayed seated, they didn't get up to get their snacks.  What was the problem?  I found out that day, they didn't have money for their snack, so they couldn't get snacks.

I went home and went back to my mom about the snack money.  I explained to her, "Mom, my friends at school don't have money and they can't get snacks.  Can we send money so that all my friends can have a snack?"

The next day, my mom let me bring $20 so that I could buy snacks for all of my friends who didn't have their own money.  That day all of my friends had a snack, and it made me so happy.

I'm asking for y'all to please help me raise money so that all of my kindergarten friends have snacks for the rest of the year.  We can do this together!

Testimonials:

She has such a big heart, and it brought tears to my eyes to hear this, tears of joy to hear how much she cares for her new friends at school and wants everyone to be treated equally and have this simple opportunity of a snack. It also brought tears of deep saddness that the public school system operates this way that a 5 year old child can see the inequality and wants to rectify it, yet we as a society at large cannot set up our schools so that all 5 year old children are fed and feel equal when they enter the public school system regardless of their family's financial situation.    - Amanda (Alayah's Nanny)
