<div><em>smoke and mold </em>publishes writing by trans, nonbinary, and Two-Spirit authors that challenges colonial narratives of place, the environment, and humanity's place within it. Launched in 2019, we publish small, carefully edited, online-only issues twice a year. We have frequently been the first publication for many of our writers, and hope to continue this trend.

<div><em>smoke and mold</em> has been largely funded out of pocket by editors. In 2023, we received our first grant from the Oregon-based Regional Arts &amp; Culture Council, to help us produce our physical <a href="https://www.smokeandmold.net/artifacts" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">artifacts series</a>. Our team has grown from a one-person operation to a group of nine editors and readers, and we continue to rely on reader support to pay webhosting and contributor fees. Every little bit helps!

<div>We are a publication with an expiration date: the journal will cease publishing in 2031 —the amount of time allotted by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for humans to be able to reduce carbon emissions in a way that would meaningfully impact climate change. Given these unique restrictions and opportunities, we are asking for community support to help us see this mission through and continue publishing work that centers trans and Two-Spirit voices on place, the enviromnment, and humanity's changing role within it.
