Smashworks Dance COVID-19 Relief
Donation protected
SMASHWORKS DANCE is a New York-based dance company founded and directed by choreographer Ashley McQueen. We dance to advocate for human rights issues and women’s empowerment through performing arts, educational programming, and community outreach. We make dance accessible and inspire audiences to take action through our performances both onstage and in site-specific environments. We view artistic expression as power—smashing stereotypes and promoting dance as a unifying and confidence-building practice for all.
In addition to our performing company, we are proud to partner with Girl Scouts of Greater New York to host confidence-building dance workshops for young girls. We are dedicated to promoting girls’ self-actualization and community development through dance and movement.
In light of the COVID-19 global pandemic, we are finding ways to continue our mission of community outreach. Our goals include free adult classes for first responders and virtual opportunities to stay connected.
Your donation supports our artists and staff during this time as we retool our season to a virtual reality.
YOUR DONATION WILL SUPPORT:
- dancer pay for virtual rehearsals
- teaching artist pay for virtual classes
- administrative costs
- space rental and theater costs when live performances resume
Now, more than ever, the survival of arts organizations and small businesses is crucial to the fabric of our society. Your donation will allow us to support our dancers during this time of uncertainty, to host virtual classes and advocacy events, and to continue our season when this pandemic ends.
Any amount is greatly appreciated!
"WE MOVE PEOPLE
Whether we want social justice, and that includes human rights, civil rights, and gender equality, it usually takes a movement. At Smashworks, we understand both senses of the word movement. Our performances are art that challenges people not only to watch us move, but to join the movement. For women, especially, we let our bodies embody our voices, rebellious and unafraid. We break down barriers, we create new ways of looking at old things.
By our dance, we move people."
