I believe that knowledge must be accompanied by action; therefore I am working on building a smarter charity to help people in post-war and developing countries. And I need your support. The vision Have you heard the saying "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime?" This is true, but only to some extent. I believe the best way to help that man (or woman) to have a sustainable livelihood is to buy the fish he (or she) catches. This is the main idea behind this campaign. But, it’s also more than that. I will explain below. First, there are some <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poverty_porn">major problems </a>with current charity, as you may know. And I am not just talking about the recent <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/apr/19/abuse-allegations-reported-to-charity-commission-double-in-a-month">abuse scandals</a>. One big problem that discourages people from giving is that charities keep a large percentage of the donations for themselves. However, the main problem is that charity usually does not do much to help people out of poverty. And, it can often be counterproductive. We can address these issues by building an online platform, which both reduces the role of the middleman, and ensures donations are effective in lifting people out of poverty. Second, in my research I found that, for people to be lifted out of poverty they need to have sustainable livelihoods. This is achieved when they can set up local industries with steady revenues. This is difficult to do in post-conflict and developing societies, where people have little purchasing power. So, that’s where we come in. Instead of just donating, we buy products from manufacturers so communities can lift themselves out of poverty. Then we donate those products to a chosen charity in the community. And the ripple effects continue, the economic activity generates public income from taxation. And in turn, people demand public services in exchange for taxes, thus cultivating civic culture. In brief, this is “smarter giving.” Finally, there is a personal aspect to this. I grew up in the turbulent 1990s in Kosovo during apartheid and war. After the war, I saw many models of charity applied in Kosovo, but few successful stories. Even when they obtain useful skills, young people cannot create a livelihood because they cannot apply those skills. They leave in the thousands in search of jobs in richer countries. This is the case in most post-war and developing countries. If we create a platform to help people apply their trade, we will ensure that they are not uprooted and their communities have a brighter future. How will it work? We build an online smart giving platform (website), which the smart givers can use. The smart givers go to the website, and first they choose a country where they want to give; then the smart givers pick a manufacturer to buy products from, and finally givers select the charity to donate the products to. The online platform is backed up by agreements with manufacturers and charities in individual countries. We will track each purchase and donation to make sure it ends up in the right hands, and send pictures of products and receipts to the smart givers. How your donations will help? Your donations will help to cover the costs of building the online platform (website) and some running costs. I am donating my time and effort for this project to become a reality. Similarly, my wife is donating time and effort as she is designing a meaningful logo. (Our toddler, Otto, also helped by clicking the button to start the campaign :) ) Who will benefit? The people who will benefit from this project and your donations are poor people in poor countries who will ultimately receive the donations. Also, small firms who make the products that buyers will buy to donate will benefit, as well as those young people to be employed as a result of the business that will be created. Generally, the people of poor communities will benefit because the firms will pay taxes that will be used for better public services. Where will the funds go? The funds will go towards paying for:  - the construction of the online platform (3000£ foreseen)  - making agreements with producers and charities in 3 initial countries (travel costs) (581£ foreseen) All funds that are not used for paying for the website and travel costs, will be used for donations for earthquake survivors in Kosovo, Albania and Macedonia (I will post pictures of receipts). Problemi me këtë lloj bamirësie është se nuk i nxjerrë njerëzit nga varfëria. Ne mund ta adresojmë këtë problem duke ndërtuar një platformë që garanton se donacionet janë të sukseshme në nxjerrjen e njerëzve nga varfëria. Së dyti, për të eliminuar varfërinë njerëzit e varfër duhet të kenë jetesë të qëndrueshme. Kjo arrihet kur bashkësitë kanë industri vendore me të ardhura të rregullta. Kjo është vështirë të bëhet kur ka mungesë kapitali dhe fuqie blerëse. Mirëpo ne këtu mund të ndihmojmë, duke i shfrytëzuar donacionet tona, jo vetëm si lëmoshë, por duke blerë produkte nga prodhues vendorë. Pastaj këto produkte i dhurojmë tek shoqatat bamirëse. Efektet pasojë të këtij modeli vazhdojnë: aktiviteti ekonomik krijon vende pune, si dhe të ardhura publike nga tatimet. Dhe pastaj, njerëzit kërkojnë shërbime më të mira publike në këmbim për tatimet, duke nxitur kulturën politike pjesëmarrëse. Shkurt e shqip, ky është modeli i “dhurimit të mençur”. Së treti, duhet përmendur se unë përmes aktiviteteve me Institutin Ballkanik të Politikave (IPOL) dhe organizata tjera vendore e të huaja, kam parë që modelet e ndihmës që nga paslufta kanë dështuar. Rinia nuk mund të gjejë vende pune edhe nëse ka shkathtësi e edukim. Dhe kështu ata ikin në vende tjera në kërkim të punës. Nëse krijojmë një platformë që iu ndihmon rinisë të gjejë vende punë, ne garantojmë që ata nuk shpërngulen dhe bashkësitë e tyre ku jetojnë zhvillohen. Së fundi, duhet theksuar se forma e ndihmës që vie nga diaspora nuk po ka sukses në zbutjen e varfërisë. Kjo për shkak se kryesisht ndihmat e diasporës përdoren për konsum, që nënkupton konsumim të produkteve të huaja. Nëse kemi një platformë që ndihmat e diasporës të shkojnë kah blerja e produkteve vendore, kjo do të siguronte që diaspora mund ta vërejë kontributin direkt në zhvillimin e vendit. Si do të funksionon? Ne e ndërtojmë një platformë të dhurimit të mençur (faqe interneti), të cilën mund ta përdorin dhuruesit. Dhuruesit aty e zgjedhin shtetin ku dëshirojnë të dhurojnë, pastaj prodhuesin nga i cili i blejnë produktet, dhe në fund e zgjedhin shoqatën bamirëse për t’ia dhuruar produktet. Platforma në internet, bazohet në marrëveshje me prodhuesit dhe shoqatat bamirëse. Ne e ndjekim secilën blerje dhe dhurim për t’u siguruar se përfundon në duart e duhura, dhe dërgojmë fotografi të produkteve dhe faturave tek dhuruesit. Si ndihmojnë donacionet tuaja? Donacionet tuaja ndihmojnë në mbulimin e kostove të ndërtimit të platformës në internet. Unë jam duke dhuruar kohën dhe punën që ky projekt të bëhet realitet. Gjithashtu, bashkëshortja ime është duke dhuruar kohën dhe punën në dizajnimin e logos me kuptim.
