<div>Mijn naam is Yanthe van der Wijst en sinds 2023 ben ik arts, afgestudeerd aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. De afgelopen jaren heb ik gewerkt binnen de kindergeneeskunde, gedreven door mijn grootste droom: kinderarts worden.

<div>Dit jaar krijg ik de kans om zes maanden als vrijwillig arts te werken op de kinderafdeling van Zomba Central Hospital in Malawi. Dit ziekenhuis verleent elke dag zorg aan talloze zieke kinderen – maar vaak met veel te weinig middelen. Samen met het lokale team zal ik ondersteunen waar de nood het hoogst is: van spoedeisende hulp en medische observaties tot visites en noodzakelijke behandelingen.

<div>Naast het tekort aan artsen is er in Malawi een nog groter probleem: het gebrek aan basisbenodigdheden. Handschoenen, desinfectiemiddel, verband, thermometers en dekens ontbreken vaak, waardoor veilige en goede zorg onnodig moeilijk wordt. En minstens zo belangrijk: kinderen hebben hier nauwelijks toegang tot speelgoed, kleurboeken of knuffels – kleine dingen die juist zoveel verschil maken om angst te verminderen en een ziekenhuisopname minder beangstigend te maken.

<div><strong>Hoe kun je helpen?</strong>

<div>Deze <strong>GoFundMe </strong>is bedoeld om praktische kosten te dekken die direct impact hebben op de zorg voor kinderen, zoals:

<li>Speelgoed voor de kinderafdeling (plastic blokken, stapelspeelgoed, ballen)

<li>Creatief materiaal (kleurkrijtjes, kleurboeken, stickers, prentenboeken)

<li>Noodzakelijke logistiek op locatie (zoals eenvoudig onderdak nabij het ziekenhuis en lokaal vervoer)

<div>Elke bijdrage – groot of klein – gaat rechtstreeks naar het verbeteren van de zorg en het kindvriendelijker maken van de afdeling voor de vele kinderen die in Zomba Central Hospital behandeld worden.

<div>Samen kunnen we een tastbaar verschil maken: door niet alleen de medische middelen te bieden die nodig zijn, maar ook een beetje licht en troost aan kinderen die dat het hardst nodig hebben.

<div>Mocht er aan het einde van het project geld overblijven, dan doneren we dit aan een betrouwbare lokale partner die de kindzorg ondersteunt, of gebruiken we het om voedsel, speelgoed en/of schoolmaterialen voor de lokale gemeenschap aan te schaffen.

<div><strong>Help Improve Child Care in Malawi</strong>

<div>My name is Yanthe van der Wijst, and since 2023 I have been a medical doctor, graduating from the University of Amsterdam. For the past years I have been working in pediatrics, driven by my biggest dream: to become a pediatrician.
</div>
<div>This year I have the opportunity to volunteer for six months at the pediatric department of Zomba Central Hospital in Malawi. This hospital provides care to countless sick children every single day – but often with far too few resources. Together with the local team, I will be supporting where care is needed most: from emergency admissions and medical observations to ward rounds and essential treatments.

<div>But beyond the shortage of doctors, Malawi faces an even greater challenge: a lack of basic supplies. Items such as gloves, disinfectants, bandages, thermometers, and blankets are often missing, making it unnecessarily difficult to provide safe and effective care. And just as important: children here have little to no access to toys, coloring books, or stuffed animals – small things that can bring comfort, reduce fear, and make a hospital stay less frightening.
