In November 2014, I started an appeal for the homeless shelters in our local community. For the past five years I have helped 100s of Sligo families who have found themselves in difficult circumstances.
I am a mother of one, and I have a strong belief that every child should wake up to a gift from Santa on Christmas morning. My son was bornthe same year I started the appeal. I was and still am so grateful for all I have in my life that I want to give back when I can.
Covid-19 has limited my capacity to collect donations this year for the homeless in sligo so I thought a go fund me page would be an opportunity for our community to help, if they were in a position to.
Although I have many clothing items purchased myself and I will ensure two shelters will have gifts for Christmas Day. I can’t provide gifts to the volume of children and families who may require them as with previous years.
Since 2014 with the generosity of the Sligo Community, I provided Christmas presents and treats for the homeless children the last weekend before Xmas each year. My main aim for the appeal is to make sure every child wakes up to a Santa gift on Christmas morning. Our gift bags gerenally contain similar items which mean every child some in the same families receive an equal amount of gifts. We include 1-3 toys, colouring books, PJs underwear socks and vests, new clothing items and a reading book, chocolate Santa and a selection box. We have now children Santa presents to prepare for Xmas eve. males and female gift bags to prepare. In these we include a t-shirt gift wrapped, socks underwear vest hat and gloves. Essential hygiene items and some treat items such as chocolate and biscuits and sweets. Each bag for every homeless male or female also contains similar items so each service user has a similar gift to open Xmas day. I have no exact numbers but will have clarity in the coming weeks.
Home is a word which resonates deeply with myself and it conjures happy memories of childhood and the place I love to return to every Christmas to spend time with my family. Every person deserves a home, every child deserves to wake up to a gift from Santa and food on the table. Some of us a lucky enough to have a place called home, the place we all love to return to. Home the place we are at our happiest. A small thing we do each year with the support of the community of Sligo is gather donations for those who are less fortunate than us, to make there Christmas a little bit brighter, hope is the one thing we all have in common, when the sun goes down the stars come out, there is always light, love and hope.
Covid-19 has changed the manner in which I carry out my appeal. But maybe some of the community in Sligo wishes to help.
Sligeach Abu, the land of hearts desire, the county I am proud to call home. We have done it the past four years we have successfully delivered a gift to every homeless person in Sligo including those suffering poverty. Let’s make 2020 our best Christmas yet.
