<div>Op 15 augustus herdenkt Nederland de capitulatie van Japan, waarmee de Tweede Wereldoorlog voor het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden officieel ten einde kwam. Tijdens deze jaarlijkse plechtigheid worden alle slachtoffers van de Japanse onderdrukking in Zuidoost-Azië tijdens de oorlog herdacht. Voor velen is deze herdenking een belangrijk moment van reflectie en verbinding.

<div>BersaMaju, onderdeel van Vereniging Tropenvrienden Alkmaar. heeft het initiatief genomen om een Herdenkingsmonument te realiseren in Stadspark Oosterhout, Alkmaar. Dit monument zal dienen als een gedenkplek voor hen die getroffen zijn door de gebeurtenissen in voormalig Nederlands-Indië. Het proces om een dergelijk monument te plaatsen is echter niet eenvoudig en vereist een breed draagvlak en financiële middelen.

<div>Na succesvolle gesprekken met de Gemeente Alkmaar en het houden van de eerste Indië-herdenking in park de Oosterhout in Alkmaar, waarbij we een overweldigende opkomst en steun zagen, weten we dat dit draagvlak er is! De herdenking bracht mensen samen, jong en oud, om stil te staan bij een gedeeld verleden en om verhalen te delen die nooit vergeten mogen worden.

<div>Waarom dit monument in Alkmaar?
</div>
<div>Het doel van het monument en de jaarlijkse herdenking in Alkmaar is om iedereen de mogelijkheid te bieden om een herdenking bij te wonen. Voor velen, vooral ouderen, is het door leeftijd of mobiliteitsproblemen niet altijd mogelijk om de herdenking in Den Haag bij te wonen, terwijl het voor hen van onschatbare waarde is om stil te staan bij deze geschiedenis. Het monument zal een plek bieden voor lokale herdenkingen, waar mensen uit Alkmaar en omgeving samen kunnen komen om te herdenken en te verbinden.

<div>Daarnaast wil BersaMaju met dit monument ook de tweede, derde en vierde generaties betrekken en informeren over deze belangrijke historische gebeurtenissen. Door hen in contact te brengen met de eerste generatie, die nog persoonlijke verhalen kan delen over de oorlog, de capitulatie en de repatriëring, blijft dit deel van onze geschiedenis levend en relevant.
