SkyWhale: The Not ShyWhale

“SkyWhale” is a 2019 Burning Man Honoraria Grant recipient that intends to break our assumptions of possibility by bringing a life-sized technicolor flying whale to the dusty sky above playa. The whale is an anchored parafoil kite that will swim above deep playa providing a magical visual and interactive waypoint in the dust. Building off of the theme of metamorphosis, the project will transcend our perception of the air, as a canvas and medium. Engaging our perception of the ether as a multi-dimensional space, in which ideas and whales can swim through. Transformation of physical reality through imagination and art will help expand our perception of what is possible.
We hope that the juxtaposition of this elegant sea creature found only in our struggling oceans, will kindle the flames of imagination and wonder within all who see, touch, and listen to the piece as she arrives into the dusty and inhospitable nature of the desert. We also strive to open the possibility of using the sky as a location for art and to look up with curiosity and adoration at the wonder nature has provided us. “SkyWhale” projects our dream of allowing the imagination to run wild, through transformation of our general conception of the use of three dimensional space.
Sounds:
Our flying love is meant to be experienced and engaged with. A whale song synthesizer powered by a generator attached to speakers will be placed at the anchor point. Burners will have the ability to create whale song while watching her float along. Recorded whale songs will play between participant engagement. She will give shape and to the wind, and bring a sense of peace to those who find her floating. The sound will be all encompassing to those in the immediate environment of the Skywhale, as if you are truly swimming along next to the wonderful creature
Size:
Humongous! 90ft Long 24ft Wide and 18ft tall. She will fly anywhere between 30ft and 500ft off the ground!
Costs:
Our main costs are as follows: painting supplies, heat transfer printing, special order low porosity fabric, 2700lb lines, lifter parafoil, international shipping, truck rental, testing, build space rental. We will use the donated funds to create something new and wonderful. Your donations will help the project get off the ground!
