When I was 18 years old and just starting college I was diagnosed with Ovarian Agenesis. A diagnosis not known or seen by many, it is a congenital absence of ovaries, which also put me into a state of being post menopausal. I was having those dreaded “hot flashes” that many women suffer from for years and never knew what they were until hearing I was born without ovaries. As an 18 year old female all I heard the doctor say was “you’ll never be able to get pregnant and have kids.” (These were his exact words mind you.) Now as you can imagine, being told that as a young female I was devastated and fell into a long running depression and still to this day it has taken a toll on me. I come from a huge family and am one of 6 children. Every woman’s dream is to get married and start a family of her own and I have accomplished one part of that. Yes, there is always adoption. But as a woman it is supposed to come naturally that I could reproduce and create life and raise a child of my own. So yes if that is where life takes us then fine, but to be able to try and see if it is even possible to get pregnant is how I want to start this journey. Many may not know this but infertility is not considered “a necessity” when it comes to health insurance therefore it isn’t covered so as you can imagine it costs an outrageous amount and is all out of pocket. Not only will I have to cover my own expenses, but also the expenses of the egg donor we will have to use. For example, the pregnancy test alone will cost about $1,500 and the approximate total for an egg donors expenses is about $30-36,000. As you can imagine it wasn’t easy sharing all this personal information and it isn’t easy asking for help but we have reached a dead end at this point. I’m not asking for a lot but if there is anyone out there that would be willing and could find it in the kindness of their heart to share and donate to this cause and help my husband and I start a family it would mean more to me than you could ever imagine.
