<div>Yet in a brutal twist of fate, NaNa was struck by stage 4 tongue cancer, and later by radiotherapy -induced injuries — threatening to silence not just her voice, but her very being as an artist.

<div><strong>WHY NANA NEEDS US - THE STORY </strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In 2008, NaNa discovered a lump under her tongue.
</div>
<div>After seeing four different ENT specialists who refused to act, she was finally diagnosed in 2009 — by then, the tumor had grown dangerously and was life threatening.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>A surgeon told her:
</div>
<div>“If you weren’t a singer, I would’ve cut out most of your tongue.”
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>NaNa refused:
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>“I didn’t know if I could go on living if I woke up without a tongue. Singing was never a profession for me — I’ve been singing since I was in my mother’s womb. My voice was shaped by my parents, directly inherited from the musical talents of my ancestors, and by their will.”
</div>

</div>
<div>She risked her own life to save her voice and underwent radiotherapy , chemotherapy and brachyterapi only.
</div>
<div>She survived, but the long-term effects were devastating.
</div>
<div>NaNa's tongue became completely immovable because of the scaring.
</div>
<div>Noone told her it would happen.
</div>

<div>She had to learn to talk again.
</div>
<div>For the first 3 years she had a feeding tube in her stomach - eating through the mouth was too painful.
</div>
<div>Her vocal chords were unharmed and it made NaNa keep fighting through the traumas after the surgeons ignorance.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>But.. It got worse...
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In 2014, a devastating diagnose.
</div>
<div>The brachy therapy was destroying her jawbone. A complete resection of the entire mandible was needed.
</div>
<div>The surgeons now told her:
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>She would never smile again.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>She would never feel a kiss again.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>She would never get a normal size jaw
</div>
<div>- never get dental implants - not even dentures.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>And the worst words of all, they told her:
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong><em>“You will never sing again.”</em></strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>When she asked if any other surgeons elsewhere could help, the response was
</div>
<div>“No one can do better than us.”
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>NaNa realized that if she was to do the surgery in Sweden, the outcome would be like she'd had stroke on both sides of her face.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>8 YEARS OF GLOBAL RESEARCH</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>NaNa refused to accept that.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>" You can't tell me that you are the absolute best in the world! There is always someone better, bigger, taller, kinder, more skilled..
</div>
<div>That made me determined to prove them wrong. "
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>For eight years, NaNa did the research herself, contacting maxillofacial surgeons all over the world. She finally found proof.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Fibula-free flap jaw reconstruction can be done without cutting the Trigeminal nerve ​(Nervus trigeminusnerve) and the Facial nerve (Nervus facialis) — preserving sensation and movement.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>A surgeon in New York was also found using techniques that could preserve the soft tissues around the throat, avoiding further loss of function.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This led her to an Indian surgeon who later came to Sweden and started working at the Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala, where he got the head of the Oral Surgery apartment very interested to try the advanced technique that was new for Sweden, but not in India.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>"So, when the head surgeon saw my CT scan, he just blurted out:
</div>
<div>'I just have to say this! When I saw your scans, I said out loud three times,
</div>
<div>"That's the worst injury I've ever seen."'"
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>But after a year of waiting and preparing mentally , the hospital withdrew the offer — leaving NaNa with no choice but to start all over again and look elsewhere.
</div>
<div>She had a breakdown.
</div>
<div>The Indian surgeon at the Swedish hospital became a good friend.
</div>
<div>He was shocked by the way NaNa was treated and told her that if she came to India, he would be able to give her the help she so desperatly needed.
</div>

<div><strong>THE INDIA SURGERY &amp; BEYOND</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>At the end of 2021, we - M. A. S
</div>
<div>- A nonprofit society for Oral Cancer &amp; Osteoradionekros (ORN) - started this journey with NaNa and all thanks to the donations from so many <strong>amazing</strong> people who follows and loves her -

<div>NaNa was able to travel to Bangalore, India.
</div>
<div>In September 2022,
</div>
<div>after a 20-hour difficult surgery in Kochi - Kerala, her jaw was successfully rebuilt — but the job wasn’t finished.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>TODAY</strong>
</div>
<div>It has been a long time healing physically since then. Two years of working continously with training her left leg, learning to speak again and hoping deeply for her singing voice to return.
</div>
<div>NaNa has fought herself through many of the traumas she's been through.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>She has proven the Swedish surgeons wrong. I<span style="color:inherit;font-family:inherit;font-size:1rem;">t was worth going to India. </span>
</div>
<div>Today she can still feel her upper lip, she can feel a kiss and she can SMILE.
</div>
<div>She has regained the strength in her left leg and the jaw is continuously<span style="color:inherit;font-family:inherit;font-size:1rem;"> healing without any setbacks.</span>
</div>
<div>She has learned to talk again and some of her singing voice is still working too. 
</div>

<div>But it's far from over.
</div>
<div>NaNa has been in need of the following surgery for over 2 years and counting.
</div>
<div>Her new jaw is still not properly connected to her head, the free - flap is still in her mouth and she has no teeth at all.
</div>
<div>On top of this,  the tracheostomy damaged her vocal chords. 
</div>
<div>N<span style="font-family:inherit;font-size:1rem;color:inherit;">ana can still sing, </span>
</div>
<div><span style="font-family:inherit;font-size:1rem;color:inherit;">but it pains us to say - </span>
</div>
<div><span style="font-family:inherit;font-size:1rem;color:inherit;">3/4 of her range is gone. </span>
</div>
<div>A huge setback.
</div>

<div>We are now trying to do our best to help NaNa get the next surgeries.
</div>
<div>Not only searching for the right cranio maxillofacial surgeon all over again, but we are hoping to find the best <span style="font-family:inherit;font-size:1rem;color:inherit;">Phonetician (voice box specialist) in Europe, </span>
</div>
<div>to heal her voice.
</div>
