Skate Oakland cultivates educational, physical, and social skills for youth using figure skating as the bridge to excellence.
We are partnering with the Oakland Ice Center Operated by Sharks Ice to provide girls from underserved communities with figure skating instruction, academic mentorship, and a supportive environment to foster a healthy lifestyle, increased self-esteem, a sense of personal empowerment, and a pathway to achievement.
All program activities are provided free of charge to participants.
We are currently recruiting an inaugural group of 10 low-income girls from Oakland between the ages of 10 and 14 to launch the program in January 2017.
We are fundraising now for the necessary start-up costs to get this unique program going. These costs include snacks and school supplies for the girls, website hosting to allow us to reach a wider audience, custom Skate Oakland t-shirts for all participants to make them feel like part of a team, speaker fees for experts to teach special topics such as good nutrition, and other basic expenses. The more money we are able to raise, the more opportunities we'll be able to provide; our ultimate goal is to expand the program to reach a greater number of kids in need.
