Hello,
This is a fundraiser for my coworker in Charlotte.
After having continuous coughing, chest pain, head aches and almost 20lbs in weight loss, my coworker (Harish) finally decided to go to the hospital and get an ultrasound and a x-ray of his lungs.
This is when they had found some fluid had entered his lungs and that he needed to be admitted in the ICU immediately. After successfully draining the fluid out the first time, the fluid seemed to form again in the next couple of days. Not knowing what the root cause of this was, the doctors did some blood work and also took a sputum test.
As the test results came back, the doctors were able to confirm that he had active tuberculosis. Soon, they started his treatment for TB and monitored the fluid level in his lungs. After a week of starting the TB medication, they had to again pump out the fluid that had formed in his lungs. Once they were able to monitor him over the next couple of days and confirm that the fluid was not redeveloping, they were able to finally discharge him from the hospital after almost 2 weeks in isolation. He had to remain in isolation for the next 2 weeks after coming home as well, since the TB was still in a contagious state and was easily spreadable through the air.
This is when the department of healthcare took over for the his treatment. The total treatment is for 26 weeks. The first 8 weeks being the most crucial, he would have to report there daily and the next 18 weeks would be 3 days a week.
Unfortunately, he did not have great insurance and most of the medical bills and fees are not being covered (expensive lesson to learn). After explaining to the hospital that we would have to pay out of pocket, they have agreed to a one time payment of $14,000 from the original $64,800.
