SIT Service Dogs is working with the Southern Illinois University Chapter of Freedom by Design to create an accessible outdoor space for people with disabilities to bond and interact with their future canine partners.

Who are we?

SIT Service Dogs is a service dog program located in Southern Illinois. We train and place service dogs for people who have physical disabilities and medical conditions. Service dogs allow our clients to move forward with independence, confidence, and give them the ability to chase their dreams. We place dogs nationally for mobility assistance and medical alert such as seizure response, respitory and vascular diagnoses, and diabetic alert. In addition to providing service dogs, we administer several community programs including our Canine Therapy Program, educational programs, and temperament evaluations in shelters/rescues. What are we trying to do?

Often, service dog recipients and program participants come to the SIT facility to visit with the service/ therapy dogs in training.  Many of our recipients and participants are children and teens. When the students with Freedom by Design contacted us looking for a project, our first thought was to create an outdoor area that would be accessible to our visitors as well as foster a therapeutic and playful environment. It is important our service dog recipients and therapy participants feel at ease to interact with the dogs, ask questions, and complete the tasks neccesary to moving forward on their journeys with our dogs. The students at Freedom by Design understood our concept and are providing us with a spectacular accessible outdoor 'park'. The club is providing all of the hands on work and are working diligently to find recylced materials, however, we fill need additional funds to purchase trees, materials for accessible seating, safe/accessible walkways, and fencing. This is where YOU come in! You can help make the path to working with a service dog a little less bumpy for a child with epilepsy or a teen with cerebral palsy. YOU can help us create a safe place for brain injury patients and the mentally disabled to interact with the dogs, bringing smiles to lots of faces! We also plan to open the park monthly for "ask the trainer" play days aimed at reducing the number of dogs returned to shelters, rescue adoption meetings, and service dog team meetups.

How can you help?

Donate. Volunteer. Share.

If you donate to our accessible park fund, you will be helping further our commitment to providing service dogs and canine therapy to those in need. If you would like to help but can't donate right now, that's alright: Do you know someone with a green thumb or in the landscaping business? Do you have extra lumber or hardware from a home improvement project? LET US KNOW! We can use donated/ low cost materials to lower our costs and get our park up and running!
Help spread the word. If you aren't able to donate, share our mission on facebook, with your friends and family, and any where else you can. Don't underestimate the power of sharing!
