Sisters in Cinema (Sisters) is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization creating a world where all Black women, girls and gender non-conforming media makers have equal opportunities to develop and thrive. We center and celebrate Black women, girls, and gender non-conforming media makers by providing programs designed to educate, raise visibility, and support and serve our communities. We stand against systemic racism by creating a more resilient, expansive ecosystem by centering and elevating sister media-makers. The time is now to create a space for us, by us.

Did you know the person who captured George Floyd's final moments is a young Black teenage girl named Darnella Frazier? At Sisters in Cinema, we are working to center the voices of Black media makers. The time is now to tell stories by us about us. In response to this moment foregrounding the Movement for Black Lives, the media industry has increased interest in diversifying representation behind the camera. We are catalyzing this moment of profound systemic change by creating a physical space for our sisters and programs to prepare them to thrive in this moment of opportunity.
Sisters in Cinema is creating a hub for media makers to facilitate connections, develop skills and harness creative power in South Shore and beyond. Programming is developed with community input and is offered to participants free of charge to create a more inclusive creative community.
Dr. Yvonne Welbon began her search for her sisters in Cinema as a graduate student in the 1990s because of the absence of easily accessible information about Black women creators behind the camera. Decades later, Sisters in Cinema has become a nonprofit offering Black women, girls and gender non-conforming media makers opportunities to thrive. Your financial support will help us sustain an organization for us and by us. Together we can support sister media makers.
