Sissy’s road to recovery

Donation protected
On the 14th of August Sissy underwent her second Microdisectomy surgery for a reaccuring back injury.
The surgery sis has had is a lumbar discectomy. This has involved operating on her spine and removing bone in her vertebrae to access the disc in her spine that has been pressing against a nerve in her spinal cord. The nerve has been compressed for approximately 6 months now as sissy had been determined to heal her back and avoid surgery. Due to the nerve in her spinal cord being compressed for so long sissy eventually had a completely numb leg, was unable to walk properly and has been in severe chronic pain.

Sissy lives in Ballarat and is the Kinship carer of her younger cousin. Sis works in Melbourne and is strictly not allowed to drive for 6 weeks and isn't receiving the required time needed to recover in paid leave from her work.

Sis has already spent 4 days in hospital and is now home with her younger cousin who is currently in year 11 and involved in lots of community and social activities of which sis would normally drive her too.

Sis is in a massive amount of pain at the moment and is house bound for the next 6 weeks before she can begin Physiotherapy which will be a very long, painful, expensive process.

Sissy being the only income earner in the household and having to take care of all the financial aspects that come with raising a child and living independently, this surgery has taken a huge financial toll on sissy.

Sissy only had her first surgeon appointment at the Royal Melbourne Hospital 2 weeks ago, and was expecting a wait time of 3 months plus and that was going to give her a bit of freedom to financially prepare herself for the time off work she would need. But Sis received a call Monday last week saying she was having the surgery the following day. So this was a huge shock to her, but ultimately she could no longer go on in the pain she was in.

Sissy is a active member in the community and is constantly helping others and is always the first person there if anyone ever needed anything, it would be amazing to see everyone help her out in this stressful and challenging time.
