HAPPY 5TH ANNIVERSARY TO THE SHELTER INTERVENTION PROGRAM!

Our 5 year anniversary goal is to raise $10,000 to represent the 10,000+ people and pets we've helped so far.

In April of 2013, Downtown Dog Rescue started our first month of assisting low income pet owners keep their pets out of the South LA Shelter and in their homes.  By asking pet owners a simple question, "How can we help you with your pet?", our counselors have assisted more than 10,000 pet owners by offering a variety of services. 

43% of services were for spay/neuter surgeries, mostly for senior pets with medical issues;
38% for medical care and ongoing treatment which included crisis care;
7% needed handyman services for adhering to "notice to comply" tickets;
5% needed help with redemption fees so owners could be reunited with their animals that were impounded;
4% required legal assistance; and
3% required humane euthanasia at a partner animal hospital

In July 2016 our community outreach programs expanded to include the Pet Resource Center on Skid Row. In partnership with Inner City Law Center, we help approximately 60 pet owners per week. Last year, with a full time attorney devoted to assisting homeless and low income pet owners, 113 pets remained in housing, which had a positive impact on 137 people including 45 children. Offering free services is more than just solving a problem by paying for services, it's changing the way families with pets live.
