My name is Tay. I’m a single mama, vet student, and community activist.

With no government assistance and not much family support, I relied solely on paychecks from work to take care of my children, but with this wrongful termination, everything has collapsed all at once. Unfortunately, on November 13th, we were displaced causing my children to become separated and my breastfeeding journey was forced to end. A few of us are now staying in a basement at my mother’s house. It’s only been a few days, but unfortunately, the energy here has been unsupportive, extremely uncomfortable, and unhealthy for us, something I was not at all expecting. For some reason we have been getting passion aggression, unnecessary attitude, being disregarded, and treated like we did something wrong. We don’t even get acknowledged. It has all come out of nowhere and has been super depressing. We need to leave as soon as possible!

I applied for every program possible with social services, including cash assistance and emergency assistance, but have been denied multiple times for reasons that make absolutely no sense. They have truly failed us in every way possible during a situation like this. I have been in disbelief! I also filed for unemployment immediately after losing my job, but the employer has delayed their paperwork, so my benefits are still on hold a month later. It’s been a full month with no income! I’ve been trying to do all that I can to carry this on my back, but I’m starting to feel so defeated.

Since losing our house, I have decreased our funding needs since we no longer need rent assistance. So far, with the $812 donations that we have received, I have been able to get us some of our household essentials, put some money towards my school tuition, and pay my teenager’s phone bill.

My biggest goal right now is to reunite my children and get us into safe housing. Shelters are full. I’ve been recently looking at transitional housing programs, but they are asking participants to pay a monthly program fee to subsidize the program. I have applied to over 40 jobs through Indeed, and I have three interviews lined up next week. I am trying so hard to rebuild everything to get us stable again, but right now, we need help getting through this.
