Project overview
For almost 15 years, volunteering students from the University of St Gallen have run social and environmental initiatives to make this world a better place – for us and for our children. This year, together with our expert partner Clear Rivers from the Netherlands and our local Malaysian partner organization FAB, we help a village in Borneo (Malaysia)to overcome its substantial plastic pollution issues. These issues do not only directly affect marine life and fishing – the very basis of local survival – but also impairs the hygiene and the future of hundreds and thousands of children. Therefore, through litter traps in the bay, we free the ocean from plastic and use it to upcycle and process it into bricks that can provide housing to the local community.
How are we going to achieve this?
We are raising 3000 CHF with our GoFundMe campaign and, on top of that, we organize multiple bake sales, charitable events, and other activities, to raise additional funds. We put all our energy into this project and do not simply stop at fighting the symptoms: We use a sustainable, “360 degree” circular approach. This means that we collect and process the polluting plastic but also educate and raise awareness to stop the plastic from even getting there. As volunteers maximizing their impact, transparency is crucial to us. Therefore, we will document and share all our activities, photos, and videos so that you know where your donation goes: Namely 100% towards the cause, without bureaucracy or any other administrative burden. Also, through communicating transparently, we can celebrate our milestones together, so follow us on our social media channels (website, Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin )!

SIMocean is a young and professional not-for-profit organization founded by us, master students at the University of St. Gallen, as part of our master’s degree of Strategy and International Management. Our team is comprised of six motivated students: Giovanni from Italy, Hui from China, Manuel from Italy, Marco from Italy, Pavani from India, and Philipp from Austria. We have come together to work towards our common vision: eliminate plastic pollution in the ocean!
