My Volunteer Experience in Uganda

Please Help Me Make My Dream Come True

I became a social worker because I want to help people to live the best quality of life possible. After working in the field for several years I am still a very enthusiastic and hopeful social worker. I realized that in order to have the greater positive impact I want to make on the world I needed some additional skills. In order to obtain these skills I had to go back to school.

I am currently a  first year PhD student at Simmons College, School of Social Work.  This means that I am taking foundation courses and learning  how to become a social science researcher and educator. Among the many reasons I selected Simmons School of Social Work is my advisor Professor Hugo Kamya.  He is a wonderful human being, a very patient teacher and an excellent role model.

Professor Kamya and Simmons College offer a summer course that includes a three week hands on experience  in Uganda. This course offers students the opportunity to provide social work services in the developing world.  This means providing services to individuals and families as well as learning how develop community organizations.

An ongoing project created by students in the course, is an agency assisting  children in Uganda - who have lost one or both parents - attend school.

The Uganda experience also teaches students about the realities of life in a developing country. It is an opportunity to begin to build connections between the developed and the developing world.

My goal is to begin my own work building these bridges. Uganda would be my first experience building those international bridges. I hope to expand this experience to build bridges in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, South America and other African nations.

I am asking for help paying for the program to help make my dream of working internationally possible.

The total cost of the program is $5,000, this includes the cost of the course, international airfare, and accommodations.  I would need to pay for the program (at the very latest) by June 2018.  Since I am a PhD student the study abroad program is giving me a little extra time to find the money to attend the program. If you are interested finding out more details about the program you can check out the attached link.

I am self employed. Which means that I only get paid when I work. So in additon to the cost of the course I will be losing three weeks pay. But I still have to pay usual expenses (rent, phone, health insurance, etc) at home while I am in Uganda. Which makes the cost of the trip even higher for me.

Unless I can get help paying for the cost of the course, the expense of the trip and my general expenses will make it impossible for me to participant in the Uganda program.

Achieving the educational goal of working in Uganda is the first step toward my professional goal of working internationally, to help create positive change around the world. I am asking for assistance to begin this journey.

Your assistance in making my educational goal possible is greatly appreciated.
