Sight for Cory

My son is going blind. Those are very hard words to say.
When Cory was in high school his plan was to graduate and have a career in the Air Force. Disappointment prevailed when he was diagnosed with Keratoconus. The disease disqualified him to join any military branch.
Keratoconus is when the cornea thins and is not strong enough to hold its round shape and will bulge outward like a cone. It can lead to blindness.
Imagine blurred vision and a halo ring around every object. It’s like going to a 3D movie and not wearing the glasses. That is how Cory’s vision was explained to me.
As a senior, Cory was making plans for college, since the Air Force was no longer an option. I asked him what he would like for graduation, then I heard the words that broke my heart, “Mom, do you think I could see before I go to college?” His vision was getting worse.
We spent the next year at the eye doctor every month trying to find the right fit for the largest hard contact known to man. During this time Cory started college in the fall and worked a part time job. Months after college started his eyesight was failing rapidly. He found himself quitting his job and was no longer able to drive a car. Dropping out of college would soon be next. The contacts were not a success. The future he was planning came apart for the second time.
Cory is a very sensitive, sweet, and shy guy that never speaks up or complains about anything. I couldn't imagine how he felt at this point. He didn’t want to speak of the topic of his eyes anymore.
Cory was ready to accept that he could be blind someday. As his mother, I was not. I was not going to let my twenty year-old give up on his life, sitting in the dark feeling all alone. There had to be more.
I spent months researching and everything kept pointing back to Dr. Brian Boxer-Wachler. The expert in Keratoconus. He invented the non-invasive C3-R Crosslinking. Renamed Holcomb C3-R.
Cory’s records were sent to Dr. Wachler. We found out he is a candidate for both eyes to have Intacs (plastic rings placed under the surface of the cornea to reshape), Holcomb C3-R (Crosslinking- strengthening fibers of the cornea). Cory’s left eye is almost legally blind and has Astigmatism, he will add CK (to reduce Astigmatism).
This is going to be very expensive and Cory does not have insurance. I cannot afford this on my own. The longer we wait the worse his sight gets, heading towards blindness and disqualifying him from this procedure. I am asking for everyone's support. Time is everything at this point. In December Cory will turn tewnty-one years-old. What better gift than The Gift Of Sight!
