The provision of quality education is considered the key factor in accelerating the future growth and development of Sierra Leone.
The Sierra Leonean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) reports that teachers with low level qualifications constitute the existing teacher workforce. Teachers at all levels lack minimum core standards which include:
-Literacy – reading, writing, checking spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax of own and learners' work
-Language – speaking and listening
-Numeracy – carrying out calculations, interpretations, evaluations and measurements
-ICT – using e-learning, a virtual learning environment (VLE), e-mails, new technology, video conferencing, creating resources, for example, using a word processor, a spreadsheet or a presentation package.
According to a Reuters report, over 10,500 people lost their lives in the Ebola crisis, leaving 9000 orphaned children and 181 teacher deaths.
Following on in August 2017, a mud slide killed and displaced over 1100 people, ruining school buildings, residential buildings, businesses and precious landmarks. Despite efforts to support the educational development, natural disasters and epidemics have created obstacles to well-intentioned programmes by the Sierra Leonean government and world aid organisations. It is under these fragile contexts that UKAPES , a UK based organisation comprising of a passionate group of experienced teachers is hosting CPD sessions for all teachers on 14th and 15th August 2018 in Freetown, Sierra Leone to support and strengthen their existing practice through modern teaching techniques and innovative pedagogies, as part of efforts to raise the standards of teaching and learning in the country. Within these resource limited situations, UKAPES trainers, Isatu Sankoh-Bangura and Joyce Elemson will present, share and demonstrate cost-free methodologies that will improve teaching quality and more importantly enhance the learning experience for young people in both the rural and urban areas of SL.
It is UKAPES’ objective to engage with all interested teachers and education agencies to institutionalise continuing professional development through the following means:
*inject education quality by teacher engagement and all education stakeholders in Sierra Leone
*transfer teaching and learning strategies from the UK to Sierra Leone
*raise education equity and opportunities for African youths
*influence education policy
*enforce positive change in African originated curriculum
mobilise scholastic skills and resources from experienced Diasporeans
In order to meet costs of mobilising UK trainers, funds are necessary to cover flights, resources, accommodation, hire of facilities and communication costs. We encourage interested members of the public to support by donating any amount towards the reality of this noble cause of teacher development in Sierra Leone with the desired result of maximising learning outcomes and increasing global participation for SL youths.
