Sierra (Dani) Pedroza has a profound love for cycling! Her cycling adventures took her back to her fathers’s cabin in Eagle Nest, New Mexico this past week for road and mountain biking adventures. Her first trip to Angel Fire Mountain Bike Park was a great first run down the mountain. On her second run down, she took a major fall with a severe blow to the head. What first appeared as a concussion ended up far different.
Sierra’s head impact caused dissections in both carotid arteries. Blood clots formed and dislodged into her brain causing three different strokes. The most significant one is in the cerebellum at the base of the skull. Each carotid artery now has another blood clot adhering to the lining and creates a high risk of additional strokes.
Doctors are monitoring her with great care, knowledge and wisdom for Sierra’s best outcome. Sierra has youth, health, determination, grit, spunk and all-around badassery on her side. These no doubt will propel her forward in her recovery.
She is currently being treated in the Neuro ICU unit at UNM hospital in Albuquerque, NM. She is responding well with neuro checks and assessments. The brain healing process is slow. There are so many unknowns at this time and the length of stay is undetermined. The ICU stay will likely extend into next week. When medical conditions are stable, then therapy begins and a rehab stay is generally the next step.
Staying in Albuquerque for the near term is likely for Dan and JJ, her mother. JJ flew in from Costa Rica yesterday and will help Dan continue to be by her side in support. This all brings about extended stay costs and logistics since Dan and Sierra live in Austin, Tx. Needless to say, any help they can get to defray medical and support costs through this initial stage, rehabilitation, eventual transport home and longer term care needs is much appreciated.
