Sickle Cell Advocacy and Activism

Thank you so very much for visiting my fundraising campaign.  My name is Lakiea Bailey and I am a sickle cell disease patient and advocate. This is my personal compaign designed to raise funds to support my ongoing sickle cell disease advocacy efforts.

Sickle cell disease is a devastating disease that affects over 100,000 in America and millions worldwide. I was diagnosed with this disease when I was three.  By the grace of God and despite hundreds of hospitalizations, dozens of blood transfusions and multiple major surgeries, I have been blessed to complete my education and perform research studies designed to better understand sickle cell and to improve the plight sickle cell patients around the world.

It is my heart's desire to be a resource and an advocate to the sickle cell community. In order to do this effectively I need your help. Through hard work with multiple sickle cell community-based organizations, including Sickle Cell Warriors, Inc., the Sickle Cell Community Consortium and the Titus Huismann Sickle Cell Foundation of Augusta, I have been able to assist in organizing fundraisers to help the families of sickle cell patients, provide small scholarships for college-bound sickle cell students and teach classes on sickle cell advocacy, awareness and education. I'm proud to have been able to do my part with these efforts, but this is only the begininng.  There's so much more to be done.

With your help, I plan to attend Advocacy Day at the DC Capitol, the annual Foundation for Sickle Cell Disease Research meeting and the National Sickle Cell Disease Association meeting, to continue speaking out about the difficulties and discrimination that sickle cell disease patients face.  I plan to continue developing the Sickle Cell Community Consortium and advocating for myself and for patients throughout the country.  No donation is too small.  With your help I can continue following my passion until the silent suffering of sickle cell disease is no more.
