After seeking medical care from her primary care doctor for over a year with unresolved bone pain and breathing issues, our dear friend Sharon Swanson sought a second opinion and was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer which had already spread to her brain and spine. Due to the advanced stage of the cancer, Sharon was not a surgical candidate nor eligible to have chemotherapy. She is receiving treatment at Dana Farber where she has undergone radiation therapy to her brain and is undergoing a difficult and challenging daily targeted immunotherapy regimen. Due to her illness and the side effects from treatment, Sharon has been unable to work and lost her job as a social worker this past November.
In June, after 38 years of employment at The Boston Globe, Sharon’s husband Joel has now too lost his job.
Both Sharon and Joel have contributed so much to their local and extended communities whether through Sharon’s profession as a social worker helping troubled teenage girls and families, or volunteer work as a Girl Scout Leader and in the Marlborough public schools and Joel’s as a Cub Scout Leader and baseball coach.
Sharon and Joel have numerous expenses which have added up due to Sharon’s illness and now losing both of their jobs. They also have two dependent children. There are numerous copayment fees for frequent CT and PET scans, MRI’s, primary care and specialists’ office visits, radiation, lab work, prescriptions, immunotherapy drug treatment, insurance, and costly deductibles all in addition to household expenses. Most recently, Sharon has required a transfusion for severe anemia.
