Hello,
My name is Josean Melendez, proud owner of Shorty the beagle. He currently lives with me at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. We are on our way out in May but Shorty needs some preventative medical care to ensure his health. It's hard to come up with the funds for his care because of my current situation. I am about to graduate college and already have other financial obligations that need to be met monthly. After making a fake gofundme page to send Shorty to the Moon, my mother asked why I haven't tried making one for him that was real. Filled with guilt, I decided to give it a shot.
His Story:
Let me tell you Shorty's story. Shorty was found in the summer of 2011 in Southern Maryland. Saint Inigoes to be exact. I was enlisted in the Coast Guard at the time and was on my way home when I saw him on the side of a rural road. I picked him up hoping to find his owner but it soon became clear that his owner probably abused him. Shorty was terrified of humans. Anytime anyone would stretch or raise their hand he would run away or roll over. My landlord decided to adopt him but eventually, we all had to move and that's when I took Shorty back home with me to New York City. That is how he ended up in my care but Shorty isn't doing well these days. In the past, I reconciled his lack of medical care as a trade off for his adoption and other costs of care but I've grown close to Shorty and want to see him at his healthiest.
The Problem:
Shorty has a couple of fatty tumors on his right side and really bad rotting teeth. To top it off, he has heart disease which could be an indicator of his age. Although Shorty is loved more than ever and has learned that there are good people out there I fear that his health will deteriorate prematurely and I can't stand the thought of knowing I could have tried crowdsourcing to pay for his medical needs. It is my understanding that his rotting teeth may be hurting his heart or other bodily organs through his blood stream.
Medical Needs & Cost Estimate:
In order for Shorty to receive the care he needs he has to have a heart exam to make sure he is healthy enough to undergo surgery: $500.00
Removal of Fatty tumors: $700.00
Teeth removal and cleaning: $800.00
Total amount $2000.00
Let me be clear that these are estimates given to me by Dr. Monica Belvedere from Dutchess County Animal Hospital. The cost will vary.
Timeline:
The sooner the better.
What Will I do In Return:
In return for your donation, I will send out copies of all invoices related to Shorty's medical care that the funds were used for. If there are any funds left, I will donate it to my local ASPCA and send out those documents as well.
In addition to what's listed above, I will also volunteer 40 hours at my local animal shelter or animal related services, which I will also send out those documents as well.
Finally, I will definitely send out updates for Shorty's procedures and photos of his progress.

Shorty Fun Facts
-He enjoys giving chase to geese, deer, groundhogs, squirrels, the occasional runner, and skateboarders.
- Shorty's favorite toy is a stuffed green little monster with a squeaky. Although he has a lot of toys, he just won't let go of this one.
-Shorty will never chase a ball unless it's made of food.
-I once tricked him into thinking a green tennis ball was his monster. He gave chase only to be disappointed.
-I think his favorite color is green. My reasoning is that his last absolute favorite toy was also GREEN! I'm seeing a trend here.
- His favorite food is TUNA FISH! He'll do anything for anything fishy.
- Shorty's best-executed command: Sit (especially for food)
