Short Film Roots

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

We are a team of final-year film student from Queen’s University Belfast, and we need your support for completing our final film. Our short film ‘Roots’ explores the topics of cultural appropriation and self-love through the lens of the black community and what black people face in Northern Ireland.

Cultural appropriation is a huge problem nowadays, caused by a lot of influencers and celebrities. Society is usually unaware of this problem, which we think needs to be changed. Our film, by exploring a person who is black by race but Irish by nationality, will give some understanding into this problem. The film will mainly concentrate on the hair culture and its meaning amongst black people.
As Lori Tharps says: “JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING ABOUT A PERSON'S IDENTITY COULD BE LEARNED BY LOOKING AT THE HAIR.

Cultural appropriation is everywhere around the world, and the beauty standards dictated by the white majority causes a lot of ethnic minorities to feel ashamed of their appearances and how they look. We want to explore and show how beautiful being different is and how amazing it is to be a part of a diverse culture, particularly in NI.

The film will be made through a various interesting use of film techniques, particularly an important scene will be an ANIMATION! So we are willing to experiment and showcase this important problem through a wide range of interesting filmmaking techniques.

Now, in order to make our film a reality we need your help. Your donations and shares will help us to pay for the food and transportation of the actors, who will deliver this story. You also will help us to obtain the props through which we achieve the different scenes and the overall look of the film. So each and every donation and share will help us make our project!

We understand that in the situation that the world is in right now, not being able to contribute is okay. So, each of your donations or shares on social media will make us closer to creating this project. We are thankful to each and every one of you! We hope that soon you will be able to watch our short film. And hope you will like it.
