<div>On January 7-8, 2024, Bill Hacker, Nancy Schmieder-Hacker, and their boys Jacob (21) and David (15) lost their Altadena home in the Eaton fire. The evacuation order came soon after the fire was reported at 6:21pm on Monday, and electrical power had already been cut to homes in the area. In total darkness, they had less than 30 minutes to load up their two Brittanys, Rx medications, important documents, and laptop computers. That night they slept on couches in their church, and they recently began a 2-week stay at an Airbnb in Monrovia.

<div>Bill’s grandparents built this home in the 1960’s, and it’s been home to the Schmieder-Hackers for 26 years. Built of concrete blocks with an adobe brick exterior and a classic red-tile roof, they dutifully maintained the original exterior and interior of this modest home. The landscaping was minimal around the house and on the property. None of this made a difference in the Eaton fire, and the remaining scorched walls will be razed. Homeowner’s insurance is unlikely to cover the full cost of living in rental housing for the next 2-3 years, replacing furnishings and personal belongings, and rebuilding a new home. In the meantime, they hope to stay in the Pasadena area to allow both boys to continue daily training with the Pasadena Dance Theater, where Jacob teaches Conservatory students.
