I'm about to share something I'm pretty embarrassed about, but I want others to be aware. My husband lost his job at the beginning of May (this is not the embarrassing part), We have been job hunting since then. He started a program a few weeks ago to learn IT and try to better our situation and make him more marketable. We decided we'd job hunt while he schools and could make things work with our savings and severance. We figured we could make it till he had a new job, and were trying to do the odd job in the meantime to make things work. Tyson is required to apply for 4 full times jobs a week for his unemployment benefits, though he's does much more than that. It was while doing this he had applied to be a secret shopper. (He has also been donating plasma.) We had heard about secret shopper scams, so we looked up the company, it seemed legit so we did it. First they sent us 2950 we were to spend 2500 and keep 450, did that, then was 3950, keep 950 and we were to spend 3000. After learning more about what secret shopping would entail we decided it wasn't the best idea and told them we were stopping. We were checking our bank account today and realized the first check had now been essentially cancelled and we had already followed the instructions for the second. We are out essentially 5500 dollars. All our savings. Please share our story, please don't let other people that are just trying to get by in a difficult situation get taken the way we were. I'm not sure how we are going to do what we need to now, but we will figure it out. Please share! We thought we knew so much about scams, but this I had never heard of until now. I knew other scams, but not this. We were just trying to do things right. As a note for those that don't really know us, we have 7 children, 2 were special needs foster to adopt, many of our kids have health problems and I spend a large majority of my time taking them to and from doctors, therapists, etc. It makes it really hard for both of us to work and the programs my husband has been doing has taken up so much of his time.
Edit, we have talked to our banks and credit card companies, we will be filing a police report, but there is not much we can do to recoup any of it.
