Critically, this footbridge will provide safe access to essential life resources including health-care, education and employment, across an impassable stretch of river. In this way, it will connect rural communities in the region, helping to increase life opportunity, health and wellbeing, and reduce the likelihood of poverty.
For those who don't know, I am originally from Malaysia and I am a bridge design engineer based in Hong Kong. I am currently working on a tunnel project under a secondment with a Hong Kong contractor BuildKing.
Our work to construct the footbridge in Uganda will include: managing the project from start to finish; preparing construction plans; organising logistics of the construction and the trip; and provide the necessary health and safety talks to those involved in the construction works. The project requires me to be on the ground for two weeks in Uganda.
In the past, I’ve been involved in several community infrastructure projects, through volunteer roles, including with Engineers Without Borders Malaysia.
This is an opportunity to transform the day-to-day life of a community, one that has been shortlisted and chosen by the Bridges to Prosperity charity as particularly in need of this infrastructure.
In order for the project to go ahead, I am aiming to raise £1,500 which will go towards materials, tools, labour and travel expenses. So any amount, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.
