Shelter Medical Isolation Facility

Tax deductible

Home at Last is a private, non-profit humane society located in The Dalles, Oregon. Started in 2000 by caring individuals who were concerned that too many dogs and cats were being euthanized in our community simply because they were homeless, Home at Last was born with nothing more than a firm belief that there was a better way to treat the needy pets in our community and a firm commitment to make these changes happen.

A few years later we moved into our current location, which was previously the Wasco County Animal Shelter. The building is now 47 years old!

We take in all stray animals brought to us by The Dalles Police, Wasco Co. Police, Sherman Co. Police, and many more, and accept as many owner released pets as possible, space permitting.

All of our animals receive vaccinations, are spayed or neutered if needed, receive any needed medical treatment and are microchipped before they are adopted. They also receive the love and attention they need from our caring staff, and volunteers, daily.

Here at Home at Last we do our very best for our animals, but unfortunately the outdated building imposes a number of obstacles to fully care for them properly.

One of the many needed updates that would help us tremendously is a proper medical isolation facility.

Currently the area we use for isolation also takes on the role of owner release/ stray intake room, where we store and give vaccinations and treatments, as a tech computer room, as well as overflow cat and dog kennel room.

This year we have been faced with several different medical cases from animals brought into us already sick. With our current building arrangements and the sheer number of animals that we care for it has become very difficult to properly isolate and treat these animals.
This has forced us to close our shelter for longer periods of time to the public. This is unfortunate for our animals for a number of them are unable to meet the public and go to their forever home.

Once we reach our goal and are able to build or create a proper ISO area we then can care for several sick animals at a time, and we will be able to take in more animals from the community who have medical needs. Our goal is to have a building completely separate from our main building, and has no other purpose than isolation. Each kennel will be easier to clean and each kennel will be set up so there is no chance of contamination between animals.

Any support is greatly appreciated!
