Sheldon's Squad

Thanks for taking the time to visit my campaign, I'm Lucy and the representative for the wider 'Sheldon's Squad.' We are a group of colleagues and friends who are raising money for our work colleague Martin Sheldon.  Having worked with Martin for a number of years in a small country town in Bairnsdale, Victoria, you become more than just work colleagues.

Following a horrible accident on 20th March 2018, our good friend and colleague Martin is facing an uncertain future.

Martin has just become a first time Father and clearly dotes on his new son, Vincent. Martin returned to work (reluctantly!!!) following his paternity leave on 19th March 2018 and undertook to instill for him and his new family a better work/life balance. Having a baby had put things into perspective and in undertaking some self care and enjoying his passion for mountain biking, Martin suffered a terrible accident.

Martin is a wonderful colleague and his passion for his job has inspired so many, anyone who works with or alongside Martin will tell you he is driven and passionate and that behind that drive is a wicked sense of humor and an all round fantastic guy who loves food!!! Now is the time for his colleagues to repay some of that passion and get fundraising to give a little back to Martin and his family.

Over the coming months a variety of fund-raising events will be organised, but to begin with a group of us will be running in the Wings for Life race in Melbourne. For some this will be an easy challenge, but for others hard work and dedicated training is definitely required!!!! Wings for Life donate 100% of our joining fee to Spinal Injury research, but we are wanting additional sponsorship to support Martin, Laura and Vincent through this uncertain time. This money will be used to support Martin in the purchase (as he puts it) of a 'Whiz Bang' Wheelchair, as for those of you that know Martin, only the best will do!! We also hope that by raising the funds we can take some of the financial pressure of Laura and Martin as Laura is also currently on Maternity Leave.

Martin and Laura pass on their many thanks for everyone’s kind words and generosity and asked that I pass on a quick update on Martin.

Martin is currently in ICU at Austin Hospital. Every day he is showing improvement with his breathing exercises. He has managed up to an hour of un-assisted breathing. He will one day be off the ventilator and knowing Martins stubbornness and willingness that will be sooner rather than later!!!

Martin has been diagnosed with Quadriplegia, currently he has movement in his shoulders down to his elbows. There is still swelling going down,  so we are hoping there will continue to be improvements. He has been told he has 1-3% chance of walking again, but Martin reminds us he is lucky to be alive!

Martin is looking forward to eating again, stating he is is hanging out for a chicken parma, followed by chocolate!!! (No surprise there!!!!)

Martin has stints of 5 minutes where physiotherapists cap his tracheotomy, and he can speak. Martin tries to fit weeks worth of conversation in these 5 minutes.

His attitude is incredible. If anyone can get through this, I am confident Martin can. Martin is already telling me we will need to sell our boat, so he can buy a bigger one to handle a wheelchair!

Go Sheldon Squad...we are all so inspired
