I am Shelby Willburn, a Junior at West Texas A&M University where I am a Delta Zeta. Here is my story!
When I was in seventh grade I found out what an exchange student was, and from then on I was determined I would study abroad. I have bugged my parents now for over 7 years about it. When I was a Junior in high school I tried to become an exchange student in Melbourne, Australia but things didn't work out. Since then I have been making plans on doing so while in college. In the past year I have applied to many things that I have not been accepted into; Texas A&M, Disney World's College Internship Program, etc. So when it came to applying for study abroad, my hopes were high but my expectations were low. This is something I have wanted to do longer than being an Aggie or interning at Disney World. The application process has been long and stressful, but... on July 6 while at the cabin, I got woken up by a call that I had been accepted into the University of Cape Town, South Africa for the Spring semester of 2017. I cried tears of happiness for finally achieving something I have wanted for so long. This program is very expensive and there are many costs involved, and I'm not looking to put my parents in financial struggles so that I can go. So, I will be doing many fundraisers including this GoFundMe in hopes I can raise as much as possible. Anything helps and I am so grateful for all of the positive wishes I have already recieved.
I will be gone February 19 through July 17. I will be taking a full load at the #1 school in South Africa, University of Cape Town. While there I am hoping to join clubs on campus that go 2-3 days a week and help teach at local schools. On this trip I am not only looking to study a different culture, but to help the community in any way I can, while experiencing things I will never be able to again. Anything you can contribute I will be so grateful for whether it's prayers, positive wishes or money. I am so excited and it still doesn't seem real yet. I will be documenting my whole trip so that you guys can follow everything I am doing while I am there. Please feel free to share this with others!
