Hello!

My name is Shelby and I am a 20 year old student attending Trinity Western University in Langley, BC but originally from Winnipeg, MB. Last year I took a year off after high school to go on a gap year program called Outtatown (http://www.outtatown.com) that had the motto "Knowing yourself, knowing the world, knowing God" and I really did learn about all three.  The year was very impactful and transformative for me in many ways, and one of the most life changing parts was my time spent in Guatemala. I was there for three months, and felt so at home despite being in a completely different part of the world. This time allowed me to discover a passion for service and support for others in need. While in Guatemala, I worked often with children who were living in poverty, without proper education or housing. While this was hard to see, I also learned about the impact that education can have on a child, and the true impact that investing in the lives of these children can have. I knew that I wanted to go back to Guatemala, and spend more time with the people of the country doing my part to help others.

I loved the idea of returning to Guatemala this summer, and luckily I learned about an organization called Global Shore Opportunities (https://globalshore.org/summer-program/) It is a unique program that combines a two-month work term in Ontario with a two-month service term in Guatemala. In Ontario, the other team members and myself will be employed at a farm working full time. Then, in July and August, we will live in the small town of El Tizate, Guatemala where we will get into the service part of this summer. This is close by to where I lived last year which is really great. I can’t wait to walk the streets of Antigua, Guatemala (a beautiful city 15 minutes away) and feel the familiarity of it.

While there, we will partner with GSO’s programs including helping teach children at their school, work with local churches and ministry groups, and we will be working with the local communities as well. In addition there will be various service projects within the community based on their needs! We will also be taking regular Spanish classes so we can communicate better, and spending lots of time getting to know local families.

This program does come with quite the challenge though, because I am required to fundraise all the money to pay for my time in Guatemala. This means raising money for flights, transportation, meals, living accomodations, school supplies, etc. So, I am reaching out to you asking for your support for this upcoming adventure of mine! In addition to GoFundMe, you can also donate on the Global Shore website here: https://globalshore.org/one-time-donation/ and add my name (Shelby Sytnyk) under the "Additional Comments" section (charitable tax receipt for donations over $20)!

I appreciate all the help that you can give me and hope you'll partner with me on this journey! Prayers are appreciated as well :)
